Segmentation

Right audience. Relevant message.

Group customers by how often they visit, what they spend and where they are. Opt-outs are removed automatically, and you see the audience size before anything is sent.

Why it matters

One message to everyone fits almost no one.

A café that sends the same promotion to weekly regulars and to people who visited once last year gets ignored by both. Regulars don’t need a discount, and lapsed customers need a reason to come back.

Segments let you write for each group: thank regulars, invite back lapsed customers and leave out anyone who opted out.

Business scenario

A practical day in the business.

Golden Crust Bakery & Café in Madison, WI wants to fill slow Tuesday mornings without discounting for regulars. Owner Natalie Burke builds two segments.

  • Mon 2:00 PM — Natalie selects “No visit in 180 days” plus “Within 10 miles” and sees an estimated 154 customers.
  • 2:05 PM — SMS consent is applied and customers who bought in the last 7 days are excluded.
  • 2:10 PM — She saves “Lapsed neighbors” and uses it in a Tuesday pastry text campaign.
  • Wed 9:00 AM — The segment recounts overnight; new opt-outs are already removed.

Business scenarios and exceptions

Designed for real-world exceptions.

AND and OR groups are spelled out, counts are labeled as estimates, and screens show numbers rather than private customer details.

Count readyRules and exclusions are applied and the estimated audience is current. The segment can be used in a campaign.
RecountingCustomer data changed since the last count. The number is marked as updating until the recount finishes.
Can’t sendNo customers match, or none have consent for that channel. The campaign can’t be scheduled until the segment changes.

Can segments update as customer activity changes?

Yes. Saved segments recount on a schedule, so customers join or leave as their visits, spend or consent change.

What’s the difference between AND and OR?

AND means a customer must match every rule. OR means matching any one rule is enough. The builder shows which one is in use.

Are opted-out customers ever included?

No. Consent for the channel is always required, and unsubscribed customers are excluded automatically.

Who should use segmentation?

Campaign owners and loyalty marketers at cafés, retailers, salons and other businesses with repeat customers.

Can I see who is in a segment?

People with permission can open the list. Previews and counts are shown first, so private details aren’t displayed by default.
